Hello and welcome to the new Booktopia Blog, The Creative Corner!
You may or may not know that I am an emerging creative writer. So, I thought I would share some of my recent work here. I have been wondering whether to add a blog to the Booktopia website for a while now, but I was struggling to think of what I could talk about.
Well, here is the answer.
I am currently in my third year of a creative writing course, and as part of the assignment, we're asked to create a portfolio of our own writing. I would like to share my most recent portfolio with you lovely people.
Before I begin to show my work, however, I feel I ought to give a little information about what I write.
It has always been a dream of mine to write a novel. It doesn't have to be successful, it doesn't even have to be published. I just hoped, and still hope, that there would be a feeling of achievement when I complete my own book. Something that I can put my name to, and say: I wrote that.
Historical fiction has been one of my favourite genres for a while now. I love how authors are able to blend the past with the present, to make history come to life. I find the past fascinating, which is why I love to write about it.
But it isn't just for learning about history as a sequence of events. When we read about it, whether it is fiction, a biography or a historian's work, we learn about the values people held at the time, the way they lived and thought. We learn how the world has changed, and how we have come to live as we do today.
I don't have a favourite time period, though. I'll read about any period of history. Much of my writing so far has been set in the 16th Century; the reign of Henry VIII, to be specific. I just think that the period is so rich in event. You have everything: love, religion, war, rivalry, death, and of course, scandal. You may think this has been done to death, but that is what makes writing so appealing; each writer brings something new to their topic.
The pieces I'll be posting here are extracts of a story about this time. You'll find more information about each piece as and when I upload them on the blog. Each extract is only a teaser of a much larger story, but I hope to extend these pieces in the future.
For now, you'll only get a sneak peak.
I'll finish by saying that I welcome any feedback you have on the pieces that follow, good or bad. As I said before, I'll post a little summary of what is going on in each piece, but I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has in the meantime.
I hope you'll love them as much as I enjoyed writing them!
Yasmin
